I've Moved!!

I will not be posting on Blogspot anymore as I have found that Wordpress best supports the kind of format I'm going for. The layout and imagery is a whole lot better so definitely take a look! I will still be posting the same kind of content with some extra stuff as well and it'll all be right here:

Camel Tones to Stave off the Winter Hump

Although I was planning on doing a feature on this Winter's must-have coats, I can't help but give you guys a mini-introduction to the colour that every man and woman alike MUST have in at least one item of outerwear.
Thom Browne

Okay so imagine it is 2011 around this time of the year. The post-A Level summer fever
has faded and the cold is starting to creep in - whether this is down to the climate or the really crap air conditioning in my university dorm room is anyone's guess. At this point I was yet to make any solid friends - in fact, I was finding it hard to connect with anybody at all. I decided that I could either sit around and mope or I could summon up some courage and go meet people.

I did neither. I bought a coat instead.

For the first time in my life I was seeing more than a grand in my account and by god I was gonna milk this moment! So I
scanned the web for some options and eventually found what would soon become - rather like the apostle, John - my beloved favourite. It is an oversized ASOS coat in camel and it has been through many trials and crusades. A button is missing, a hole in each pocket means I had better trust my trousers to hold my petty cash/oyster/keys and the colour has darkened over time. Nonetheless, this beauty can be thrown over ANYTHING; dresses, jeans, formal trousers, you name it. My mother has been plotting to dispose of it 'by accident' since the dawn of time and I've had a few offers of purchase, flaws and all, but three years on it remains a permanent fixture to my life let alone my wardrobe. Its death should it come (touch wood) will be met with a lengthy period of mourning in which I will wear my black pea-coat with the shoulder pads out of respect.

My point is, that tones in the camel/tan/nude region are timeless and adaptable to whatever kind of outfit you want to go with no matter your gender.

Here are some coats and jackets in these shades for men that I would definitely look into getting hold of for yourself or a male friend/partner/sibling.

The Bag That'll Take You From Work to Workout

Like most people, until recently my fitness regime had consisted of extortionate gym memberships that got utilised somewhere in the region of twice a month.

It's no surprise therefore that my gym kit is even more pathetic than my attendance record; my 'sports bra' is basically an old bra which a size smaller than my current size and therefore restricts the jiggle. I only just invested in a pair of good running trainers to suit my gait last week - ever the over-dresser my previous training footwear had been a pair of inappropriately fashionable neon pink Air Maxes.

If you'd have seen me in the gym a couple of months ago, puffing at the treadmill at a speed level of about 5, you would have chuckled sympathetically at what was clearly a newbie out of her depth.

The pictures from a recent trip to Paris were exactly what I needed to kick me into action however - me barely fitting into my favourite pair of trousers and being cheated out of the colour black's promises to shield a multitude of sins. That and the fact that a lot of my clothes have been bought from China where the sizes run smaller than expected - something I really should have grasped by now. Alas optimism has kept me ordering the smaller sizes and I am now left with a heap of clothes I never wear due to my inability to bend over without flashing the people behind me, or stand up straight without brandishing a hideous camel toe.

So now I go very regularly and actually take my training pretty seriously. However as you can probably tell by my previous choices in footwear, Sportswear is not my forte. Anything with a visible sports logo on it is instantly rebuked by me, and don't get me started on the gym bags. I had recently bought an American Apparel duffle bag that had looked a nice burgundy colour on the website but in reality is a garish red that matches none of my outfits, sporty or otherwise. I set about trawling the web for some suitable alternatives and decided to take into consideration that there will soon come a time that someone will actually want to hire me to do 'fings' for money at some point, and I would therefore have to carry this gym bag to and from work a lot of the time. Well there was no way I'd dare be spotted with a bag the color of a fire hydrant, especially if I'm working an office job with a dress code. Unfortunately the alternatives in the female sections of my desired websites were coming up short also. I needed something with lots of space to fit my gear and any materials I may need for work. It also needed to have side pockets for my oyster card, purse etc and it had to be wearable to suit most of my clothes. A girlfriend of mine flicked a light bulb switch in my head when I bumped into her as she was on her way to spend a few nights with her boyfriend. Her overnight bag was a marvelous Ralph Lauren holdall which fit all of her garments and managed to make her look fabulous.
I followed suit.

Though Ralph Lauren is a bit (a lot) out of my current price range I took to the web again, but this time in pursuit of men's holdalls. I managed to find this gem from ASOS which cost around £35 and also came in black, although I strongly suggest getting it in a chocolate brown like I did, as it shows up just a few shades lighter than black anyway and will go with EVERYTHING in your wardrobe.

As you'll see from the pictures, I have already placed my gym gear in there, but I still have so much room I could fit like three small toddlers in there (however this would be highly unethical and I strongly advise against attempting to prove this theory).

Have a gander and then if like me, you like to keep it practical yet fashionable ladies, you must get searching for a men's holdall.

After all, nobody on the commute has to know you actually work for that body right?

Admit It...You Wished You Dressed Like: Scandal's Jake Ballard

So that time has come around again when you must relinquish your girlfriend's undivided attention and hear about how badass Olivia Pope's hair/outfit/last-minute bad publicity swerve is.
Yep. Scandal is back.
Except, grumble all you want but four seasons in and you can't help but secretly enjoy those 45 minutes a week of brutally powerful speech delivery and for godssake when will she realize that Jake is OBVIOUSLY the best pick over Fitz!?

Speaking of Jake Ballard, sartorially speaking - his All American clean cut 'simple wealth' look is one to be admired. Check out the following pieces and maybe you can pull your gal away from the screen long enough to re-enact your own special CIA scene.

Maybe...No promises!

Zegna Blazer - £1.390.00

Ralph Lauren Chinos - £150

Brown's Cashmere Jumper - £185

No.21 Ribbed Jumper - £345

Have You Started Wearing Tartan Yet?

A few weeks ago, a very special package arrived from China.
They were a pair of green and blue tartan-print skinny fit trousers and my god are they a work of art. They are a little tight because Chinese sizes run a lot smaller but it's okay because I AM WILLING TO LOSE WEIGHT FOR THESE TROUSERS!
Sheinside - $24.17

Oh My Love London - £32.00
Seriously, if you don't own something tartan then you are missing a key Fall//Winter staple. It really doesn't matter what item of clothing you choose to buy the print in; I think they look the best on trousers/jeans but Urban Outfitters do some good shirts in the print and you can get some jackets and blazers in subtle tones too.

Regardez!:

ASOS - £30
Urban Outfitters- £70
Jigsaw - £69.00

Style Stud: Alex Ebert

There's something so very admirable about people who manage turn 'disheveled' into 'effortless' and 'plain' into 'minimalist' - just by being themselves.
It's the kind of style I gravitate towards in my own wardrobe and the wardrobes of others, and one man who does it particularly well is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros front-man, Alex Ebert.

The singer/composer shows us why thin is in by complimenting his muscular but waifish frame with loose neutral clothing and an eclectic array of scarves and hats (you know I love my hats).
Ebert chooses to forego the usual mod-chic/coiffed hair indie band look and appears to have just woken up and gone along with his day as nature intended.

Take the hair, for example.
Many Man-Mags have shunned the top knot as seen on various A-Listers such as Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal, and while I can agree that the trend is getting a little bit out of hand, a lot of guys do manage to pull it off. I would say however, that the ones who do work the knot well tend to align themselves with a kind of hippy hapless way of dressing which adds to the aforementioned disheveled effortlessness. Alex Ebert sports long wavy locks which he piles on his head more often than not and accompanies with a beard - and we all know how much everyone is loving the beard trend at the moment. Not only that, but his recent win at the Golden Globes showed us that he does know how to scrub up when necessary while still maintaining his signature eccentric style.

Overall you can't help but picture him spending his free time under trees with flowers in his hair and a guitar on his lap. He probably does a lot of yoga too. He's probably into Tantra. And Veganism.

I'm getting carried away but anyway, if Ebert's style is up your alley, check out these bits and bobs:

Time to Start Embracing the Winter Blues?

This morning (ahem, afternoon) I woke up and opened my bedroom door to find a beautiful big parcel waiting for me in midnight blue wrapping.

Like a brat on Christmas Day, I tore the box open with pens, scissors and axes in order to reach my new babies. They are my new Zara moccasins and they are now my favourite children who I honour even above my beloved pair of brown moccasins from Chicago, and my graduation gift Chelsea boots from my brother.

I diverged from my original plan in two ways:

i) I'm a Winter baby by birth and nature, so whenever September creeps around I get super excited for the autumn season. I thrive on Fall/Winter fashion and dread the onset of summer every year. There's nothing worse than the itchy, sweaty restlessness of hot weather in an Urban setting.
Sartorially I don't know how to act as I have around eight winter coats but only like two summer dresses, and most of my shoes are suitable for matching with trousers, tights and little else.
But I digress! Yes, I was supposed to be building up my autumn/winter staples this year ie, very basic items of clothing that can be worn a billion different ways (plain black t-shirt, a white button-down shirt etc), so the original plan was to buy a pair of shiny black loafers which were cheap and go with pretty much everything in my wardrobe. I figured however, that you can find black loafers pretty much anywhere but once my new blue ones went out of stock, I knew I'd regret not having bought them.

ii) As I still retain the status of a broke, indebted and unemployed graduate, I am in no position to be buying fancy shoes. My plan was to wait until I secure a job and then buy myself the shoes as a kind of celebration gift. Of course impatience got the better of me, and I as I assured my father this afternoon: these shoes act as moral boosters. It doesn't matter how much or little money I have because once I put these shoes on, I look and feel like a million bucks!

If you like the look of my new shoes  you can find them here at Zara.

If you're willing to splash out a little bit more and are looking for a similar style and colour, try these Chester Tassel Loafers from Russell and Bromley or these suede shoes from Tod's.
Guys should definitely consider these navy moccasins from Zara or Reiss's suede loafers.

Whatever you go for, my satisfaction in my new purchase compels me to believe that we should all definitely be deflecting our winter blues towards our feet, and experimenting with every shade from bottle-green to navy to midnight. These shoes in these shades not only add a splash of sophistication to any casual outfit, they also shake up an otherwise dull formal get-up. I absolutely promise that you'll receive endless compliments with a pair of blue loafers on your feet, especially in a suede texture.

Try not to get too bogged down with finding a bargain; although you shouldn't be making yourself bankrupt, I feel as though shoes come under the category (along with coats, jewellery and fragrances) of possessions that you should try not to scrimp on, as you get exactly what you pay for. You'll feel the pinch when investing in a quality pair, but they'll last you forever and if looked after properly, will look just as good when you want to whip them out again next autumn.

Happy shopping!

What's Up With 'Hat?

(None of the images are mine unless stated otherwise)

As Summer draws to a glum close, the time has come to reflect upon the biggest trends that this year has brought forth.
One of my favourites has to be the reintroduction to dramatic hats that singer Pharrell Williams heralded with the aid of Vivienne Westwood. The Buffalo hat - which is a remake of the brand's pieces from the Autumn/Winter 1983-83 collection - has made waves across the board and featured heavily in the video for one of the Singer/Producer's latest singles, 'Marilyn Monroe'. The hat was subjected to mixed reviews however, as some people praised his expression of individuality while others just thought he looked rather
ridiculous.

My opinion?

Story time, kids. Probably about 3 or 4 years ago, a similar hat trend was sweeping across London. Not being one to miss out on the fun, I went and bought myself a trilby and felt fedora type thing. I loved the trilby - all of the trendy hipster kids on Lookbook were wearing them (if it's good enough for them...) and it went with most of my outfits. The fedora...not so much. Like a wally I let the refund time period go by and stuffed it in a 'bin it' box along with other sartorial undesirables. Three years after having gone off to uni to commit far more obscene fashion crimes, my father brought out the dreaded box.
Out came the hat (which I'd forgotten was even in there) and to my surprise, I looked pretty damn awesome in it. I don't know whether my change of heart was down to a shift in current trends, a shift in my own personal taste, or if perhaps my face shape had changed, but I do know that it has become my favourite hat and I have no intentions of letting it go.

Hats are accessories that add an immediate surge of character to any outfit. I like to team mine with a pair of navy linen chinos (rolled up at the hem of course) and a plain charcoal  T shirt for a casual pub lunch or cafe date. I jazz up the outfit with a gold link necklace, dark RayBans, a pair of navy low-rise Converses and of course that all-important hat. What was once a very basic and extraordinary outfit is given a quirky little spin with one simple addition. I love clothes and accessories that blur gender lines and if there's any item that does this best, it's the hat. I could wear one with a fitting pant suit and some penny loafers and still feel just as feminine as if I were wearing a killer red dress and YSL pumps.

Although Pharrell has re-invigorated my enthusiasm for hats, modern fashion icons like Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh have kept me interested, and pieces like Joshua Kane's Gostick fedora remain permanent items on my To Buy list. I intend on extending my hat collection in co-ordination with my hair growth and plan to sport waist-length box braids this Autumn, just so that I have an excuse to invest in a wide-brimmed floppy felt hat.

For some versatility and good old dependability though, I look no further than my newly-trusted fedora. As for Pharrell's signature Buffalo Hat? I say more power to him! Amy Winehouse had the beehive and Elvis had the quiff - I don't see why a good hat can't become a permanent fixture to mark one's individuality!
